Finding what your laptop needs
Check the label on your current charger for the wattage and connector. If it's lost, send us your Dell service tag and we'll confirm which charger fits.
Using a higher wattage
A higher wattage Dell charger runs a Dell laptop rated for less. The laptop only draws the power it needs. A lower wattage charger is the one to avoid: it can charge slowly and bring up warnings.
4.5mm and 7.4mm
They're two sizes of Dell's round barrel plug. The 7.4mm is the older, larger plug and the 4.5mm is the slimmer one on thinner laptops. One won't fit a socket made for the other.
Phone chargers
A USB-C phone charger might trickle charge a laptop, but it won't run one properly. Dell laptops expect at least the wattage they shipped with, usually 65W or more.
